Célestine Hitiura Vaite grew up in Faaa-Tahiti in the Ma'i family quarters where everyone was a relative, poverty reigned, breadfruit and frangipani trees grew by the hundreds, and women tackled obstacles with gusto and humour. At sixteen years old, she fell in love with a spunky Australian surfer and moved to Australia where, after learning English, she started writing stories about ordinary Tahitian people overcoming everyday obstacles. From these stories came Breadfruit, the first book in a series. For more, visit her website.
